  • Oxaliplatin (chemotherapy medication): the International Journal of Cancer in 2007 published a study that stated that curcumin can be compared to oxaliplatin when it comes to exerting antiproliferative activity in colorectal cells.
  • Metformin (a diabetes medication): a study from the Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Community journal in 2009 investigated how curcumin works for treating diabetes and found that it triggers AMPK (which increases the uptake of glucose) and restrains gluconeogenic gene expression (which reduces glucose production in the liver) in hepatoma cells. What’s interesting is that curcumin (in the form of tetrahydrocurcuminoids – THC) was found to be 500 to 100,000 times more powerful than metformin when it comes to activating AMPK and its downstream target acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC).
